eSports in Sports Bars
Written by  Spirit - Thursday, 25 August 2011  (7 Comments )

Imagine that you were sitting quietly on a stool in your favorite sports bar, drinking a pint of beer and watching some guys on TV kicking a ball or throwng it in a basket, and suddenly a horde of so called geeks invades the bar demanding to change the channel in order to watch a live internet broadcast, where some korean guys beat the crap out of each other leading computerized armies of humans and aliens in a videogame.

Sounds appealing? Then keep reading as this new trend is invading the Sports Bar in the United States and as the game in question is Startcraft II, these phenomenons have been named Barcraft events.

Barcraft Starcraft II events

In fact, fans organize these so-called Barcraft events, taking over pubs and bistros from Honolulu to Florida and switching big-screen TV sets to Internet broadcasts of professional game matches. Obviously regular customers don't feel so happy about it, having to deal with the noise that these fans do while rooting for their on screen favorites. "I thought I'd come here for a quiet beer after a crazy day at work", said Michael McMahan, a 59-year-old carpenter who is a 17-year veteran of the Mad Dog in the Fog, a British sports bar in San Francisco, over the sound of noisy fans as he sipped on a draught pint.

But when it comes to the revenue at the end of the day, this is a great opportunity for the sports bar owners, as the Starcraft viewers represent a demographic they hadn't attracted before. "It was unbelievable", said Jim Biddle, a manager of Bistro 153 in Beaverton, which hosted its first Barcraft in July. The 50 gamers in attendance "doubled what I'd normally take in on a normal Sunday night."

Millions of Internet users already tune in each month on their PCs to watch live eSports events featuring big name stars, whether it's a Starcraft II competition or even events related to Counter-Strike, League of Legends and so many other games that are appealing to gamers all around.
