 New Year Coming

Some say that this will be the year of the online gaming boom. Some say it won't. In the meantime we keep on rolling and growing and raising our expectations for the future.

Looking back, it's sad that Barrysworld is shutting down. I had great moments there, back in the QWTF glorious days and even now with Q3F. But that's what life is all about: changes. As the elder say, that's a reason to celebrate because for each one that falls, seven new ones will rise and the online gaming community will continue its inevitable path towards massification and globalization.

It was a damned good gaming year mainly with Enemy Territory and Call Of Duty releases, let's just hope that the new one will be as good or even better than this one. Happy New Year! :)

 Unwired Online Games

Check out this interview about unwiring online gaming. The games are played on mobile phones using GPRS to deduce the physical location of the game player, which is used as part of the game.

"You're chased in the real city and the virtual city, at the same time. Three runners on the street are equipped with PDAs, GPS devices and walkie-talkies. To 'get' you, they have to come within five meters of your position. The game is physical and visceral, and we were amazed at just how clearly a sense of presence in time and space was communicated. Players in Seattle, Tokyo and Germany communicating with players on the ground in the U.K. could hear weather conditions, traffic, where the busy roads were". LOL

Don't miss it :)

Doom3 and NVIDIA
03rd November 2003
"Although no release date was provided (albeit he did hint that it was at least four months away), he confirmed that Doom3’s installation size would likely exceed 3GB. In addition, the game would be locked with a hard-coded 60fps ceiling. Given how taxing this engine has proven to be in the early glimpses we have seen, that limit will still be difficult to reach by most hardware. Speaking of hardware, Todd informed the audience that the development platforms for Doom3 were all using GeForce FX graphics cards. This should erase any doubts of NVIDIA cards and their ability to run Doom3."

STEAM Update
29th October 2003
A STEAM update was released which should fix the problems that were intended for repair with the last release. As you may recall the last release went a little wrong but this one seems to have gone ok:
Added support for "trickle update", which will allow updates to games to be delivered over time before they are activated. Optimizations in Steam targeted at reducing CPU and memory load on some systems. Progress dialog always shows now during startup. Fixed handling of cache fingerprint mismatch on reconnect. Fixed case which would cause the preloader ignoring errors to send extra messages to the Steam servers. Fixed bug in Steam that would cause cache to be validated too often when Steam started. This would cause hard drive thrashing. Fixed a potential lockup case and access violation case in Steam.

Doom 3 to be capped at 60 FPS
27th October 2003
Reports state that the upcoming Doom 3 will be capped at 60 frames per second (FPS), no more no less than that. "The game tic simulation, including player movement, runs at 60hz, so if it rendered any faster, it would just be rendering identical frames. A fixed tic rate removes issues like Quake 3 had, where some jumps could only be made at certain framerates. In Doom, the same player inputs will produce the same motions, no matter what the framerate is.". Cool :)

New to Deathball? Whether you're new or not, you can always improve your skill by reading this Guide To Deathball. This document is intended to provide information on how to play Deathball, some of it for completely new players, then moving onto intermediate stuff for players familiar with the game and finally some advanced tactics. Great Lan, Great Party, Powerful Feeling!
13th October 2003
Porto, October 2003, the place where our 5th year celebration took place. Many members and well distinguished guests travelled more than 300 Km just to attend the meeting while others a mere 300 meters :).

Following a Nazare Lunch in 2002, a Lan Party with a get-together-dinner was prolly the best way to keep the feeling alive. Check out the photos.

It is always a pleasure when we get together with ppl we usually meet only at these occasions.

New Urban Terror
13th October 2003
A new version of the popular Urban Terror modification for Quake 3 has been released, taking it to version 3.1. Here's a summary of the changes: Offshore and Nimrod textures fixed. Map issues that have been reported fixed. TDM and FFA spawn bugs fixed. FPS drop bug fixed. Several matchmode issues fixed. Swapteams and Shuffleteams fixed. Bomb planting radius fixed. Bomb no longer plantable in water. Weapon tweaks. (This is going to be controversial. Many people think they are perfect, but the UMP and PSG were useless and the Negev was too uber). Modifications/fixes done for GTV. Excess server resource use issue fixed.

If you haven't heard already, Reuters has an article stating that Half-Life 2 will be delayed four months "until April of 2004." Nice Math, indeed. I just hope that the guy that did the announce is not responsible for programming the trajectories and math models into the game, or we are set for a big surprise :). Now the original Half-Life missed the release date by a year, so according to his math, if we are confronted with the same situation here, September...1 year...hummm...maybe Christmas Next Year.

Unreal University is official! Hosted at North Carolina State University, Unreal University will have seminars that teach you how to mod with the Unreal Engine. K1cK Open Lan 10-11-12 October
04th October 2003
We are promoting an Open LAN on our 5th Anniversary. Go check it out in here.

More about the HL2 source code leak, from Valve Boss: "We're still finding machines internally that have been compromised" in relation to the "infiltration of our network" that led to the code leak, and warns that other developers may also be in danger: "There's anecdotal evidence that other game developers have been targeted by whoever attacked us." But he ends with a hopeful appeal to those who've been helping Valve hunt down the culprits online: "I've been fielding calls from the mainstream non-games, non-technical press all day. Hopefully they will get to report shortly what a mistake it is to piss off a whole bunch of gamers and get them hunting you around the Internet."

Two really nifty UT2004 videos have been released recently, the first is the Official UT2004 Trailer, which is a nice, quick, slightly cheesy commercial for the game, and the second is this GameSpy Ultimate UT2004 Gameplay Video, which shows off about ten minutes of high-quality in-game footage.

Battlefield Vietnam Movie
04th October 2003
Electronic Arts have released a new cinematic trailer showcasing some of the action in their upcoming follow-up to Battlefield 1942, Battlefield Vietnam.

Offering an arsenal of weapons and vehicles authentic to the Vietnam conflict, players will battle in first-person perspective. The workhorse vehicle for the U.S. during the conflict was the helicopter and it will serve the same purpose in Battlefield Vietnam. The NVA will be outfitted with many Russian-made vehicles including the T-54 tank and Mig-21 jet. Taking a step forward from its franchise predecessors, Battlefield Vietnam will allow passengers to fire from moving vehicles and players will have the ability to airlift other vehicles via helicopter. The game will also deploy new rendering and sound engines that will help take players deeper into the 1960s mindset.

More bad news from the Half-Life 2 world today, as this post allegedly by Valve's Gabe Newell indicates that the Half-Life 2 source code has been leaked. There has been no official confirmation by means of a press release, but it seems that this is indeed true, and a major setback for Valve. At this stage there is little information, especially as to whether this will affect the shipping date for this hugely anticipated title.

Quake IV leaked Art
26th September 2003
Activion is asking ppl to remove non authorized leaked images from Quake IV all around the world. If you are curious, grab some while they are still out there, but bear in mind that the company is also thought to have issued legal threats to at least one website which linked to the images.

Quake IV, like Return to Castle Wolfenstein, is a continuation of a popular id Software franchise which is being developed by a different studio (Raven, in this instance) under the supervision of id itself. No firm date for the launch of the game has yet been set, but it is not expected until Mid '04 at the earliest.

There is a new Doom III preview that was published by GameArena. The preview goes into detail describing various aspects of the game, although there are no news - we've heard and read about it all before.

Half-Life World and K1ck New Counter-Strike Division!
25th September 2003
We have a new K1ck Counter-Strike Division, so go check it out inside. Matches are on their way and Clanbase also, as usual. The K1ck Clan Listing at CB is getting bigger and bigger...

"Due to the problems surrounding the current release of CS 1.6, Steam, lack of HLTV and various issues that could arise, we have decided to use Counter-Strike 1.5 for UKTerrorist LAN Championships 5 ". Problems, what problems ? :). Valve have announced they are to release updates for both STEAM and CS 1.6 over the next few days. As with their last release, these are mostly bug fixes including the infamous shield errors, and the issues with de_cbble.

So here it is. Half-Life 2 has been officially confirmed to be delayed from September 30th. "The previously announced September 30th release date for Half-Life 2 is being pushed back. We are currently targeting a holiday release, but do not have a specific 'in-store' date to share at this time. We will release that information as soon as we have confirmed a new date ". Didn't I see, recently, in a place not far far away from here, some wild guesses about that release date ?

Unreal Tournament 2004
19th September 2003
Check out this Unreal Tournament 2004 preview. Expected release date November 2003.

So it looks like Microsoft Games will be publishing some post-UT2004 Epic Games\Unreal titles. The press release says that, "Epic Games and its recently-formed Scion Studios will develop several new games exclusively for Xbox and Windows. The to-be-announced products will be published by Microsoft Game Studios." Epic's Mark Rein says, "we are not ready to discuss the particulars of the Microsoft deal but I can assure you that you have nothing to be worried about ". I am already shaking...

A bit of a ruck - albeit a very polite one - has developed around the new Half Life game. Yesterday Valve's Gabe Newell said that NVIDIA graphics cards were a bit crap when it came to running DirectX 9 effects, the polish that makes Half Life 2 look so good. But Valve have been told to upgrade their drivers - NVIDIA reckon their tests were run on version .45 not version .50. The new beta versions are running at breakneck speed and look as pretty as a picture according to the company, so anyone with GeForce FX cards can sleep easily tonight.

Steam, Half-Life 2 and Linux
18th September 2003
Since the release of those huge installers, most people have finally been able to get Steam working. If you're still having problems, Valve says that they are, "still committed to doing whatever it takes to make the community happy... we'll be repairing the problems with Steam until it performs the way we all want it to ". How do we want it to perform ? :)

With the Half-Life 2 technically official release date set for 30th September, I think that there is not a single soul walking on earth that hasn't serious doubts about it. As usual, some sort of mind storming will come up with an original excuse for missing the deadline.

Linux user about HL2 - "If you're a gamer with a pulse, you've probably heard about the impending release of Valve's Half-Life 2. As a gamer and a Linux user, I always get a little stirred up about the whole Half-Life situation, where we have a dedicated server but no client ". Time to change...and I don't mean OS :)

Half-Life 2 and UT 2004
10th September 2003
Check out this preview of Unreal Tournament 2004. With rumored delays for both Half-Life 2 and Doom 3, it looks as if the first high-profile FPS title of the fall could very well be UT 2004, headed for a late September/early October release.

And Gordon Freeman is still struggling to get back... Valve say Half-Life 2 will do as well as the original, which won many awards and sold more than five million copies. They also say that is due to be shipped by the end of September, despite rumours of a delay. We'll find out soon...

In the meantime, there was a Valve quiet announcement that Steam will be required for playing HL2 online. With the first non-Beta version released today, are we on the edge of "something completely different" in the Half-Life World ?

Doom 3 and Urban Terror 3.0
10th September 2003
Urban Terror Beta 3.0 is here for the taking and brings the implementation of the Bomb/Defuse game mode. This version also brings an end to the issue of aiming between LPB's and HPB's and no longer an issue of having ghost bullets :). A patch is already on the way to solve some issues in the server/client configs.

There's a new video floating around, apparently from id's E3 presentation, and Gamespot has also posted some new screenshots of Doom 3, lovely as ever... The graphically impressive shooter will also support other multiplayer modes, including team deathmatch. However, the developer has stated previously that it has focused most of its efforts on Doom 3's single-player game.

In terms of weapons, Doom 3 features a few old standbys from the original Doom games, including the plasma rifle and the rocket launcher, as well as a combat shotgun and a new machine gun. Though it doesn't seem revolutionary at this point, Doom 3's deathmatch seems extremely playable, assuming that you have spent lots of money, recently, in a full featured PC upgrade...

Back in Business!
03rd September 2003
Slowly returning to praccies, after a really hot August, is always a pleasure: seeing our team mates again, talking about new stuff that happened in the meantime and, if possible, shoot them :)

Some ppl left during vacations ( there is always one player that is never happy ), some ppl joined in, business as usual with our 5th anniversary closer, everyday now.

We have some good news ( k1ck.com is registered, new host secured, new webpage on the move and maybe a K1ck Lan in a short while ) and some possible pleasant news on the way. Also K1cker has been elected our bot-of-the-year on a short, but moving, ceremony! :)

Vacations
11th August 2003
Summer is here and as we always do each year, it's time to relax, feel the breeze and let the killing field rest in peace.

There is not much action going on till September, although some of us still wander around IRC, just in case you have some urgent matter to discuss.

But as someone said, during Summer urgent matters have a way to become not so urgent and wait till someone leaves the beach and get in the rythm again...

Victory on EQ3FL Cup!
25th May 2003
Nice victory on a game well played vs FTD. The final 4-3 on Stag was enough for us to go through on EQ3FL Cup. Now we have to wait for the draw to know our next opponents. GG FTD.

On a laggy server, we also had a scrimm victory against HS, 6-5 on Stag. Stats on Graveyard. As someone said, 1-0 always feels like a great result! :)

Ulti is our new Attack Captain. Behave or we will fire you ( as he took the job, we begun sabotaging his work, but he still does not know :). GL Ulti!

Last Matches for EQ3FL
14th April 2003
You can look at our last EQ3FL match against AR just as the story of the bottle half empty or half full. We lost the first and won the second. Are we happy ? Well, just a little bit...after all we did win one match ( bottle half full ). Should we have won both ? No doubt about it, and we all felt terrible for not securing a good advantage on Japanc ( bottle half empty ). Well, that's sometimes the problem with always keep pushing forward during the whole match.

Our last match is against New Age, let's try to keep improving our game and prepare to grab our division's first spot on the next season.

A new q3f-map has been released : q3f_toofar. Check it out :)

Q3F 2.3 Due Soon!
10th April 2003
"Almost seven months after our last news update, we're finally able to bring you news and screenshots of Q3F 2.3! It will be packed with ten new and updated maps from BirdDawg's Level Design Team which has remained busy."

"We hope to have a test build in the hands of Ghetto and our QA team with the next 1-2 weeks. The maps that are completely new to Q3F are Rock, Canalzone, Siege and Nocturne, while Smartbases 2, Chaos 3 and Sorrow have been ported from Beta 1H. Q3F 2.3 will also include updates to Cathedrals, Forts and Bases along with full PunkBuster support and a number of bug fixes."

"As if perfectly timed, we have also been nominated as 'Mod of the Month' for May 2003's issue of PC Gamer in the States, who said 'Q3F takes teamplay to a whole new level'.". Check it all at Q3F - Power Through Teamplay.

Our Q3F Anniversary is close!
30th March 2003
1 year is almost gone by since we started playing Q3F. And I think that during this year we had so many changes, ppl coming, ppl leaving, moving from National Team to International Team, 2 servers at our disposal, 0 servers at our disposal :) etc etc, that I think surviving all this and still keep on winning some matches can only predict that the road has only one way: UP! :)

Some victories on JapanC and LastResort against Nice and AR, some defeats and a more consistent teamplay. That sometimes happens when you start regular practice as a team. :P

Well, league matches on our way, let's see what we can do. Nice LastResort game tonight and a good victory against AR. Shame that the final result ( too close ) didn't reflect the whole truth about the good game we had.

Q3F 2.3 Bug Correction
10th March 2003
There is a list of bugs that 2.3 development team will try to nail down. But first the good news: Apoptoz is our newest member and due to the number of applications and players, maybe the last one for a long period :)

Concerning the bugs, let's hope they can really improve the game. Bug List:

Slowing down mid-air, Agent not fully invisible, Flametrooper crashes Japanc, CZ door trigger ent crash, Unwanted team/class consistency after map change, Map related class limits broken, Autoscreenshot broken, Missing animations, Flawed console output, Clientside view distortion on jumping, Minigunner animation flaw, cl_getservercommand: a reliable command was cycled out, Crash with extraneous maps, g_hitscanpredict can be toggled, misc_matchtimer entity crashing, Agent cannot disguise as civilian and the most important one, you can still chase and shoot me once in a while. Surely a MAJOR Bug :)

Time to K1ck ass again ?
3rd February 2003
When life gets in the way of on-line gaming it's always hard not to cut off the weakest link and, as always, off with gaming!

But k1cking-asses is always a pleasure and with q3f 2.3 almost out, probably this is a nice day to start speeding things up again.

PT arena will remove their on-line site in the following days, so for all of you history lovers, their latest news regarding K1ck will be preserved here. :)

New maps ( All of you TFers out there, check Bam5 ), new/older clans joining in, Q3FECL seems the place to be...

Q3F Nations Cup is about to start the semifinals, too bad that lots of teams dropped out due to the lack of players.

Stronger Than All still holding their Q3F leagues and check out the Castles Cup.

Q3F 2.3 Still On Hold...
12th January 2003
DevTeam still trying to fix some bugs, getting the maps to their final condition and soon they will be testing the 2.3 version.

Too bad that Portugal Arena closed for good. Always a reference to the Portuguese Community when it comes to on-line gaming.

A few more Portuguese sites related to On-line gaming are also down, and even Q3F Portuguese clans are taking it slowly...
